Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. She began her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. At the Roots performance, she announced her artist status. Then, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
